The secret of Greek Ceramic artistry - unleashed !

Greek artistry holds the privilege of being a pioneer in employing moulds apart from developing the natural use of painted decoratives. They were much too advanced in their skill for the historical evidences found reveal that during its golden age, the Greek ceramic artistry was way too different from the similar art practiced in other parts of the world. Every piece of art produced, displayed the signature of the person who made it. Some of the best pieces of early Greek pottery show the marks of two master craftsmen on one vase which means two potters often combined their skill to produce one piece.

1000 B.C. was the period during which the artistry of Greek culture witnessed a tremendous upheaval. The form that was a rage during that time was the geometric style of linear decoration. What made it special were the designs it displayed such as repeated rows of figures, zigzags, circles, triangles and lozenges. This form of Grecian ceramic artistry brought Greece in the limelight of art and culture during that period. The major aspect that made Greek Ceramic pottery so highly popular were its local designs because they reflected original and rustic art of the rich culture Greece represented. The largest and the biggest pottery ware in Greece was that of Athens, commonly known as Diplynware after the cemetery at the city gate. It is this place where the largest vases in the world of pottery ware have been excavated. Other designs which largely made these pottery ware unique were sepulchral jars with figures of funerals, corpses, processions of chariots etc. The stylized human and animal figures were represented black silhouettes performing myriad activities such as hunting, festive dancing and rejoicing etc.

The next in line in the list of significant development that took place was Italy because soon after the existing period, Greece was invaded by Rome. The following period saw nuances of Greek ceramic artistry dominating all forms of Roman artistry as a large number of craftsmen were imported either as colonists or as slaves. The only major difference between Italian and Greek pottery can determined in the type of clay each of them used.
