American businesswoman Ruth Handler created her now-classic Barbie Doll after seeing a German doll that had its own wardrobe and was small and plastic. She wanted to make a doll for young girls to have fun with and dress as a role model.

In 1956 during a trip to Europe, Ruth Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. This adult-figured doll was based on Reinhard Beuthin’s popular drawn comic character of an independent working girl who knew what she wanted. That was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased few of the Lilli dolls.

Handler reworked the design of the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) after she return back to the United States, and the doll was given a new name, Barbie, after Handler’s daughter Barbara. Barbie’s official birthday date is March 9, 1959 when she made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

Ruth Handler approached Mattel, Inc. for the production of her creation, this company was established in 1945 by Harold Matson and Elliot Handler (Ruth’s’ husband) to make picture frames. Mattel is the exclusive manufacturer of Barbie Dolls and all official Barbie accessories.
